Published April 6, 2006, 10:33 PM CDT
Police are investigating the theft Thursday of three statues, worth an
estimated $60,000, from the River North gallery of a well-known Chicago
artist.
Officers responding to a burglar alarm that went off about 5 a.m. at Griffin
Gallery of Chicago in the 300 block of West Ontario Street found a door to
the gallery had been forced open and called the owner, police said.
Three bronze statues were missing from the gallery, police said.
Griffin Gallery of Chicago exhibits the works of artist Gerald Griffin and
other acclaimed painters and sculptors, according to information on the
gallery's Web site.
Griffin graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has
been painting and sculpting for more than 20 years. He also has a gallery in
Hyde Park, according to the Web site.
